Canadian Canoe Museum
The Canadian Canoe Museum is North America's only
canoe museum. With more than 600 canoes and kayaks and 1,000 related
artifacts, The Canadian Canoe Museum's collection is the largest
of its kind.
Peterborough,
Ontario is the ideal home for The Canadian Canoe Museum. As the
world's foremost canoe-building centre from 1850 until 1960, Peterborough's
canoe-building heritage is still prevalent and visible. The area
is home to many canoe collectors, builders, paddlers, water festivals
and canoeing events. Where else would you see hundreds of paddlers
crammed into the world's tallest hydraulic liftlock on the Trent-Severn
Waterway?
The
Collection Centre houses the Museum's entire collection of 600 craft.
The collection features canoes and kayaks from across Canada, as
well as watercraft from around the world. Craft not on special exhibit
in the Weston National Heritage Centre will be on open display when
renovations are completed.

canot du nord built by Cesar Newashish.

in Peterborough, Ontario.
- The magnificent 40-ft Nu-chah-nulth dugout featured
in the Museum's Origins Gallery is a fine example of an ocean-going
craft commonly used along the northwest coast. In these canoes,
the Nu-chah-nulth people hunted grey and finback whales. They
relied on their extraordinary seamanship and skill for success
in the hunt.
