JORDAN HARBOUR
LAT 43 11.2 N - LON 79 23.4 W
JORDAN HARBOUR IS A SHALLOW, ALMOST
land-locked bay 8 miles east of Grimsby and 5 miles west of Port
Dalhousie. Just to the east of the harbour entrance (which is spanned
by the Queen Elizabeth Way highway) is a basin created by stone
breakwaters. This is a protected spot, with full marine services,
for boaters cruising in the southwest corner of the lake.
Getting There
Approaching Jordan Harbour, the most noticeable landmark is a derelict
two-masted vessel described as a replica of a 1500s ship, listing
in the west corner of the basin. The opening into the basin is at
the northwest corner of the breakwaters. At the west end of the
north breakwater is a light (IsoG) on a white tower 12 feet high
with a green upper part. The south wall has a starboard-hand daybeacon.
Depth in the entrance channel is about 14 feet, with depths of 5
to 14 feet at the marina inside.
Yacht
clubs,marinas and moorings
Beacon Marina is located on the southeast side of the basin. Watch
for the floating barrels as you approach, as they mark hazardous
rocks. The marina, which monitors VHF channel 68, has about 88 seasonal
slips and will always find a place for transient boaters. The floating
docks range from 20 to 60 feet long, and have 5 to14 feet of water.
Depth at the fuel dock is 5 feet. Repairs are available through
C&J Marine Service.
The Best Western Beacon Harbourside Resort,
behind the marina, has on-shore accommodations and a bar and restaurant.
For a modest fee, marina guests can use the resort's indoor pool,
sauna and whirlpool.
Facilities:
gas, diesel, pumpout; power and water at about half the transient
slips; washrooms, showers, laundry facilities, ice, swimming pool,
children's play area, gazebo with picnic tables, double-wide launch
ramp. You can anchor in the basin, which has a sandy bottom.
Marine stores and services
C&J Marine Service, located at the marina, offers full gas engine
repairs, with a mechanic on duty 7 days a week and emergency service
available. C&J also does minor diesel repairs (and will bring
someone in for larger diesel repairs if necessary); minor fibreglass
repairs; propeller repairs; and some electrical work. Other repairs
can be arranged. The marine store on the premises carries hardware
and fittings, engine parts, safety equipment, rope, some electronics
and cleaning supplies. (C&J was looking to expand the store
in 2002.) With a hydraulic trailer and a crane on call, boats up
to 36 feet can be hauled out, and winter storage is available.
Essentials
Jordan Station, within walking distance of the marina, has a small
convenience store. The closest provisioning is in the town of Jordan,
2 1/2 miles away; you can call a taxi to get you there.
Eating out
The Best Western Beacon Harbourside Resort, located just behind
the marina, offers a menu that includes surf and turf, prime rib,
seafood platters, veal parmigiana and pastas, as well as lighter
fare. There's a deluxe buffet on Thursday evenings and a seafood
buffet on Fridays. The restaurant overlooks the water, with a patio
for outdoor dining. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; Sunday
brunch; licensed; pianist on Fri., Sat. and Sun.; reservations
recommended; 562-4155.
Things to do
Harbour Estates Winery (562-6279), which offers tours and other
activities (including barbecues) throughout the summer, is on Jordan
Rd., a 15- to 20-minute walk from the marina.
